- First race: 1837
- Location: Aintree
- Current distance: 4 miles 856 yards
There is some discussion as to the first actual winner of the Grand National, some quoting The Duke (1837) and some Lottery (1839). The latter was the occasion on which a crowd of about 50,000 saw Captain Becher fall into the brook which bears his name.
The early Nationals were somewhat robust, emulating the cavalry’s dare devil skill, and public outcry was immediate. The course, prize money, training and administration were all thankfully improved. The early years saw many gentlemen riders – often the trainers are not completely identifiable. The later years saw the extraordinary achievement of Red Rum, with three Nationals and two second places within five years. This feat will surely never be equalled, even though the course has continued to be made safer.
How Many Horses Race in the Grand National?
Historically, there have always been 40 runners in the Grand National, however from 2024 onwards, in a bid to improve horse safety, the field has been reduced to 32 runners.
Jockeys With The Most Grand National Wins
- George Stevens – George Stevens holds the record for the most wins by a jockey in the Grand National, having won the race five times. His victories came aboard Freetrader (1856), Emblem (1863), Emblematic (1864), The Colonel (1869 and 1870).
- Brian Fletcher – Brian Fletcher is well-known for his partnership with the legendary horse Red Rum. Fletcher won the Grand National three times, with victories aboard Red Rum (1973, 1974) and Red Alligator (1968).
- Bob Champion – Bob Champion won the Grand National in 1981 riding Aldaniti, in one of the most celebrated victories due to Champion’s battle with cancer and Aldaniti’s recovery from a potentially career-ending injury.
- Ruby Walsh – Ruby Walsh has won the Grand National twice, with victories aboard Papillon (2000) and Hedgehunter (2005).
- Leighton Aspell – Leighton Aspell won back-to-back Grand Nationals aboard Pineau De Re (2014) and Many Clouds (2015), making him one of the few jockeys to achieve consecutive wins in the modern era.
- Richard Dunwoody, Carl Llewellyn, and several others have also won the race twice.
